The Republican Party has been waiting for this moment for years. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away on Sept. 18, 2020, after another battle with pancreatic cancer, and her dying wish was that her seat wouldn’t be filled until after the election.
No such luck.
Even though Senate Majority Mitch McConnell stole a Supreme Court seat from President Barack Obama in 2016, with the excuse of the election year and “letting American voters decide,” that idea went out the window as soon as the opportunity to stack the court with conservative justices was available.
Now, Republicans hope to seat President Donald Trump’s next nominee, who could be a christian conservative intent on dismantling women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, voting rights, and more. It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who knows anything about the Republicans that they would act in such a craven, power-hungry way, completely going against the so-called “precedent” they set. That’s how they have operated by and large for generations.
What makes the situation most concerning, however, is how openly Trump is signaling that he plans to use the Supreme Court to stop the vote count in the 2020 Election. A Republican president has already used the Supreme Court to steal an election before (George W. Bush in 2000), so why wouldn’t they do it again?
